Airbnb staff in residential areas with a lower cost of living won’t have any pay reduction.
On Thursday, May 28th, 2022, Airbnb stated that its employees would be able to anywhere permanently. This includes their home, office, and even while traveling worldwide.
In an email to staff, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky claimed that those working in lower cost-of-living places wouldn’t experience any changes in their remuneration. Moreover, the company will still organize frequent meetings and retreats in person. This is part of a broader shift to facilitate virtual working at Airbnb, said Chesky.
He also wrote: “The world is getting more flexible about people’s place of work. This is evident in our own business. Without millions working from Airbnb, our company wouldn’t have recovered so speedily from the pandemic”.
According to Airbnb’s research, living and working out of Airbnbs have become an increasingly popular choice after the pandemic started. Even Chesky would do the same for several months.
Nearly half the nights booked on the platform from July to December were part of stays for 30 days minimum. In 2021, 175,000 people used Airbnb to reserve stays for 3 months or even longer. The site has added more than 150 updates to accommodate remote-work trends, such as verified Wifi access.
The company also stated that it would cooperate with governments and travel destinations to provide more support for expatriates working overseas for an extended period.
